Associação Transumância e Natureza announces partnership with 1% for the Planet

Associação Transumância e Natureza (ATN) is a new nonprofit partner of 1% for the Planet, an alliance of over 1,380 member companies in 43 countries that give one percent of revenues to environmental causes.

ATN is now eligible to receive donations from 1% member companies, placing them among a diverse, global network of environmental organizations.  1% member businesses fuel this non-profit network through their annual contributions, which totaled over $22 million in 2010.  Partnership with 1% greatly expands the potential pool of funding to which ATN can look to for support.

Newly approved ATN contributes to a healthier planet by conserving, valuing, studying and promoting the natural heritage of Northeast Portugal, through sustainability and community participation, by managing and protecting natural areas. This local organization has created and manages the first private protected área in the country, the Faia Brava Reserve.

Over 2,300 non-profits worldwide are included in the 1% network, and over $70 million has been funneled to its nonprofit partners to date. “The intent of 1% for the Planet is to help fund these diverse environmental organizations so that collectively they can be a more powerful force in solving the world’s problems,” Yvon Chouinard, founder of 1% for the Planet.

“We have the profound conviction that the civil society should have an active role in protecting the ecological heritage and that the Faia Brava Reserve, which in fact is the conservation of a place where nature is the most important value, is also a positive factor for the socioeconomic and cultural growth of the region. Faia Brava is owned by everyone and should be enjoyed by everyone.” António Monteiro, Presidente da Direcção da ATN

About ATN

Associação Transumância e Natureza (ATN) is a local Portuguese environmental NGO, created in 2000, whose mission is to conserve, value, study and promote the natural heritage of Northeast Portugal, through sustainability and community participation, by managing and protecting natural areas.
Since 2000, ATN has reinforced its presence at the Côa Valley Special Protected Area (Natura 2000), where today it owns 800 hectares of land, managed exclusively for nature conservation. This property was recently classified by the government as the first private protected area in the country. It is also part of one of Rewilding Europe’s pilot areas (Western Iberia), an initiative aiming to rewild Europe’s abandoned natural areas and developing sustainable and wilderness tourism activities.
Faia Brava’s annual budget is around 150 000 euros. For the implementation of the activities described on its management plan, ATN uses several funding strategies. ATN does not receive funding from the government and depends exclusively on support from members, donors, from the sale of products and services derived from the project, as well as from national and international funding submitted in proposals.
